A cyber complaint has been lodged with the West Bengal Police over alleged defamatory tweets targeting Kalpana Das, the wife of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. The tweets falsely claimed that she is related to the personal physician of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
This development gains importance as a Bench led by the CJI is currently hearing a suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a young doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. During the proceedings, the CJI criticized the state’s handling of the case and established a national task force (NTF) to address issues regarding the safety and dignity of doctors and medical professionals, particularly in cases of gender-based violence. The Court also ordered the removal of the victim’s identity and related content from all media platforms.
