The Supreme Court of India has filed a cybercrime complaint with the Delhi Police against a social media account that impersonated Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. The imposter used the handle to solicit money, falsely claiming it was needed to book a cab to attend a Collegium meeting.
The complaint was lodged after CJI Chandrachud became aware of a viral screenshot showing a message from the fake account, which featured his name and display picture. The fraudulent message read, “Hello, I am CJI and we have an urgent meeting of the Collegium. I am stuck at Connaught Place. Can you send me ₹500 for a cab?”
The scammer further tried to legitimize the request by promising to return the money once they “reached the court” and adding “sent from iPad” at the end of the message to enhance credibility.
Following CJI Chandrachud’s complaint, the Supreme Court’s security department promptly registered a First Information Report (FIR) with the cybercrime division.
