On Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of two additional judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court as permanent judges. The Collegium, which includes Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and Justice BR Gavai, approved the following judges for permanent status:
Justice Venkata Jyothirmai Pratapa
Justice Venuthurumalli Gopala Krishna Rao
Earlier this year, on May 16, the High Court Collegium had also recommended these judges for permanent appointment. The Supreme Court Collegium noted that neither the Chief Minister nor the Governor of Andhra Pradesh had provided comments on the recommendation.
According to the resolution, the Department of Justice invoked paragraph 14 of the Memorandum of Procedure, which allows the Minister of Law and Justice to proceed with the recommendation if no comments are received from state authorities within the designated timeframe.
Consultations with Supreme Court judges familiar with the High Court’s operations confirmed that both judges are suitable for permanent appointment. After reviewing all relevant materials, the Collegium recommended that the two judges be confirmed as permanent members of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
