On June 11, the Central Government approved the appointment of two additional judges of the Gauhati High Court as permanent judges.
The judges made permanent are:
Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund
Justice Mitali Thakuria
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended this on May 18. According to the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court judges familiar with the Gauhati High Court were consulted to assess the candidates’ suitability.
A two-judge committee reviewed the judgments of the two High Court judges, finding them well-reasoned and supported by appropriate case laws.
After evaluating the materials on record and considering the opinions of the consultee judges and the committee, the Collegium found the candidates fit and suitable for permanent appointments.
As of June 1, the Gauhati High Court has 24 judges against a sanctioned strength of 30, leaving 6 vacancies.
