The Central Government, on Friday, officially notified the transfer of Justice Shamim Ahmed from the Allahabad High Court to the Madras High Court. This notification was published on the Ministry of Law & Justice’s website.
Earlier, on August 30, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and including Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, rejected Justice Ahmed’s request to reconsider the transfer. The Collegium had initially recommended his transfer on August 21, citing the need for “better administration of justice.” The recommendation followed consultations with a Supreme Court judge familiar with the functioning of the Allahabad High Court, as well as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
After careful consideration, the Collegium upheld its original proposal and reiterated its recommendation for the transfer on August 30.
Justice Shamim Ahmed was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on December 12, 2019, and was elevated to a permanent position on March 26, 2021. Prior to his appointment, he had been practicing law since 1993, handling cases in civil, constitutional, service, labor, company, and criminal law.
