On Wednesday, May 29, the Supreme Court Registry declined to list Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea for a 7-day extension of his interim bail in the Liquor Policy Case.
The Supreme Court’s refusal was based on the fact that Kejriwal had the option to seek regular bail from the trial court, rendering the current application inadmissible. Furthermore, it was noted that since the judgment on the challenge to his arrest is already reserved, the request for an extension of interim bail is unrelated to the main petition.
On May 10, the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta granted interim release to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was in judicial custody in the Delhi liquor policy case, until June 1. A detailed report on the interim order is available here.
The Aam Aadmi Party leader filed for an extension, citing the need to undergo diagnostic tests, including a PET-CT scan, and requested an additional 7-day extension of his interim bail.
Yesterday, Senior Advocate AM Singhvi brought Kejriwal’s application to the attention of a bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan. Justice Maheshwari noted that the matter had already been heard and the judgment was reserved. The bench directed that the memo be listed before the Chief Justice of India for an appropriate order. According to the interim order dated May 10, Kejriwal is required to surrender on June 2.
