The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
This decision was formalized through a resolution passed by the Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The resolution states:
“The High Court for the States of Punjab and Haryana is one of the largest High Courts in the country. Hence, it would be appropriate to appoint the seniormost puisne Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as a Chief Justice. The Collegium accordingly recommends that Mr. Justice G S Sandhawalia be appointed as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.”
Justice Sandhawalia was elevated as an additional judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 30, 2011, and became a permanent judge on January 24, 2014.
His predecessor at the Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Sheel Nagu, was appointed Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 4. Since then, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva has been serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
