The Supreme Court is currently hearing the suo motu case regarding the rape and murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The case is being heard by a Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
Multiple medical associations and professional bodies have submitted intervention applications, seeking directives from the apex court on the matter.
The doctor was tragically found dead in a seminar hall of the college on August 9, with an autopsy confirming that she had been raped and murdered.
This horrific incident has led to widespread outrage, sparking protests across the country. Doctors in various regions have gone on strike, demanding stricter laws and better policing to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
The investigation into the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court, and the Supreme Court subsequently took suo motu cognizance of the matter.
In a previous hearing, the Supreme Court issued several directives, including the formation of a National Task Force to address safety concerns and gender-based violence affecting doctors and medical professionals. Additionally, the Court instructed the CBI to submit a status report on the investigation’s progress.
The Court also directed the West Bengal government to provide a status report on the investigation into acts of vandalism that occurred at the hospital following the crime. Furthermore, the Court ordered that CISF security be deployed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
During today’s hearing, the Court will review the status reports submitted by the CBI and the West Bengal government.
