Right-wing activist and public commentator Rahul Easwar has filed a petition for anticipatory bail in the Kerala High Court after a Malayalam actress warned him of a possible police complaint following his comments about her clothing choices. (Rahul Easwar v. State of Kerala)
Earlier, the actress filed a sexual harassment complaint against businessman Boby Chemmanur, which led to the registration of an FIR and Chemmanur’s arrest. His initial bail application was rejected by the trial court, and a new plea is now pending before the Kerala High Court.
Easwar, a frequent participant in media debates, was invited to discuss the case. During these discussions, he commented on the actress’s dress style, which led her to claim that she and her family were suffering mental distress as a result of Easwar’s remarks. She also suggested the possibility of filing a police complaint against him.
In light of the actress’s warning and the potential for an FIR, Easwar has sought anticipatory bail from the Kerala High Court.
In his petition, Easwar defended his comments, describing them as constructive criticism. He contended that, as a public figure, he had the right to express his views on the matter.
“The petitioner’s intention was never to defame the complainant but to offer advice on the way she dresses, which he feels attracts undue attention, particularly from the younger generation. His comments were solely made to provide guidance and were not meant to cause harm,” the petition stated.
Easwar further clarified that he was not justifying Chemmanur’s alleged actions nor attempting to harm the actress’s reputation in any manner.
The petition is being represented by advocates Alex K. John, Ninan Thomas, Reena Jacob, and Gego George.
