Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad has assumed the role of acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court following the Central government’s approval of his appointment.
Justice Prasad succeeded Chief Justice BN Sarangi, who retired on July 19.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, Judge of the Jharkhand High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 20.07.2024 consequent upon retirement of Shri Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Chief Justice, Jharkhand High Court on 19.07.2024,” stated the notification issued by the Law Ministry on July 18.
Born in 1967, Justice Prasad is the senior-most judge of the Jharkhand High Court. He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court in 2014.
In 2015, he was transferred to the Orissa High Court and then transferred back to the Jharkhand High Court in 2018.
On July 11, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the transfer of Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao from Himachal Pradesh High Court to the Jharkhand High Court. His name is yet to be cleared.
