Judicial officers must be proficient in the local language of the area where they are appointed and working, the Supreme Court stated on Monday in the case of Legal Attorneys vs Barristers Law Firm.
A bench consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, emphasized that judicial officers need to interact with witnesses and handle evidence presented in local languages, making this knowledge crucial.
“The requirement for a judicial officer to be proficient in the local language where they are appointed is valid. Judicial officers must handle witnesses and evidence in the local language. Therefore, this requirement is justified, and any necessary changes fall within the policy domain,” the Court said.
