A court in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, acquitted Taslim Ali, a bangle seller, on Tuesday of charges related to sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of a woman. The charges stemmed from an incident in 2021 when a mob assaulted Ali, and he was later accused of sexual misconduct.
According to Ali, he was selling bangles when a group of individuals verbally abused, threatened, and physically attacked him. In response, Ali filed a complaint against the assailants, but the group allegedly fabricated a story accusing him of sexually assaulting a minor girl. This led to a cross-FIR being filed against him, accusing him of serious offenses.
Ali faced multiple charges, including Sections 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty), 354-A (sexual harassment), 467 (forgery), 468, 471, 420 (cheating), and 506 (criminal intimidation) under the Indian Penal Code, as well as Sections 7 and 8 (sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
In 2021, the Madhya Pradesh High Court granted Ali bail, observing that the charges against him were not severe enough to warrant his continued custody, especially since he had no prior criminal history. After a lengthy trial, the court concluded that the allegations against Ali were unfounded and acquitted him of all charges.
