Almost three months after retiring, former Madhya Pradesh High Court judge Justice Rohit Arya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday.
According to reports, Justice Arya received his BJP membership from Madhya Pradesh Chief Dr. Raghavendra Sharma during a program at the BJP State Office in Bhopal.
Born in 1962, Justice Arya began his legal career as an advocate in 1984. He was designated as a senior advocate by the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2003, specializing in civil law, commercial law, arbitration, administrative law, service law, labor law, and tax law. He represented entities such as the Central Government, State Bank of India, Telecom Department, BSNL, Employees State Insurance Corporation, and Income Tax Department.
Appointed as a Judge of the High Court in 2013, he was sworn in as a permanent Judge in 2015 and retired on April 27, 2024.
Notably, in 2021, Justice Arya had denied bail to comedian Munawar Faruqui and Nalin Yadav, accused of hurting religious sentiments. He emphasized the Constitutional duty to promote harmony and brotherhood across religious and regional diversities.
In another controversial decision in 2020, Justice Arya granted bail to a man accused of outraging the modesty of a woman under the condition that he and his wife visit the complainant’s house on Raksha Bandhan to have a Rakhi tied by her, symbolizing protection.
These decisions were later scrutinized by the Supreme Court, which overturned the bail conditions and issued guidelines for handling bail petitions in cases involving crimes against women.
