On Thursday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the transfer of Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao from the Himachal Pradesh High Court to the Jharkhand High Court. This decision was made through a resolution passed by the Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai.
Justice Rao will take charge following the retirement of Justice BR Sarangi on July 19.
“Upon the transfer of Mr. Justice M S Ramachandra Rao, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, to the position of Chief Justice of the High Court of Jharkhand, there will be a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court consequent to the retirement of Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi on July 19, 2024,” the Collegium stated.
Born in 1966 in Hyderabad, Justice Rao completed his law degree from University College of Law, Osmania University, Hyderabad, in 1989. He enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and later obtained his Masters in Law from the University of Cambridge in 1991. Justice Rao was appointed as a judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on June 29, 2012.
Justice Rao comes from a distinguished legal family. His father, Justice M Jagannadha Rao, was a former judge of the Supreme Court and former Chairman of the Law Commission of India. His grandfather, Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, also served as a judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
