Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, in a significant move, has tendered his resignation from the esteemed position. His decision comes on the heels of his public declaration of intent to venture into the political arena. The judge, known for his erudition and meticulous approach to jurisprudence, sent his resignation letter via post to President Droupadi Murmu, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Calcutta High Court Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam.
Judge Gangopadhyay’s decision to step down from the bench has sparked a mix of reactions, with some expressing surprise and disappointment, while others see it as a natural progression for someone with his background and interests. His tenure on the bench has been marked by several noteworthy judgments and a reputation for fairness and impartiality.
In his resignation letter, Judge Gangopadhyay expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as a judge and acknowledged the support and guidance he received during his tenure. He also outlined his reasons for resigning, citing a desire to contribute to public service in a more direct and impactful manner.
During his tenure, Justice Gangopadhyay faced numerous controversies. One notable incident occurred in January this year when he disagreed with a division bench led by a senior judge. Despite the division bench issuing a stay order regarding his directive for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities in medical admissions in West Bengal, Justice Gangopadhyay defied the order. He also levied serious allegations against Justice Soumen Sen, accusing him of ‘misconduct’ and showing political bias in favor of the state’s ruling party.
