Three female wrestlers who accused former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment have approached a Delhi court, alleging that the Delhi Police withdrew their security.
The wrestlers filed an application stating that this withdrawal occurred just a day before one of the complainants was scheduled to testify in court.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot of the Rouse Avenue Courts heard the case today and issued an interim order directing the police to provide security to the complainant until further notice.
“As an interim measure to ensure the safety of complainant/victim no. 4 (as per the witness list), the concerned DCP is directed to arrange immediate and appropriate security for her until her testimony is complete and until further orders from this Court,” the Court ordered.
The case is set to be heard tomorrow (Friday).
On May 10, 2024, the Court framed charges of sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of women against Singh, based on allegations from five female wrestlers.
In total, six wrestlers accused Singh of sexual harassment, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against him. On June 15, 2023, the police filed a chargesheet against Singh under Sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (sexually colored remarks), 354D (stalking), and 506(1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The complainants had initially approached the Supreme Court seeking the registration of an FIR against Singh. The Delhi Police later informed the Supreme Court that an FIR had been registered and the investigation was progressing.
While the Court discharged Singh from allegations made by one wrestler, it framed charges concerning the allegations of the other five.
