On May 13, a court in Kerala sentenced Shyamjith M, who was recently found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend Vishnupriya, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹2 lakh on him in the case of State of Kerala v Shyamjith M.
Additional District and Sessions Judge AV Mridula also sentenced Shyamjith to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 449 (house-trespass in order to commit an offence punishable with death) of the Indian Penal Code.
“The sentence shall run concurrently,” stated the court in Thalassery in its order.
Shyamjith was convicted by the court on May 10 for a case registered by Panur Police Station in 2022.
The incident occurred on October 22, 2022, when Vishnupriya was on a call with her friend at her home in Kannur District. Shyamjith forcibly entered her house armed with a hammer and knife, subsequently murdering her by slitting her throat, hitting her head with the hammer, and stabbing her multiple times.
According to the prosecution, Shyamjith had previously been in a relationship with Vishnupriya, a pharmacist, and sought revenge against her for ending their relationship.
During the trial, the prosecution presented a total of 73 witnesses, arguing that Shyamjith showed no remorse for the brutal murder.
Advocates S Praveen and Abhilash Mathur represented the accused, while Public Prosecutor K Ajith Kumar represented the prosecution.
