Retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, has been appointed as a member of the Bahrain International Commercial Court (BICC), a key initiative under Bahrain’s “Team Bahrain” program. The BICC is designed to boost private sector investment by offering a specialized forum for resolving commercial disputes with international parties, making it an important step in strengthening Bahrain’s legal infrastructure.
Justice Kaul is one of nine distinguished members appointed to the BICC by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The court will be presided over by renowned arbitrator Jan Paulsson as president, with former British judge Sir Christopher Greenwood taking on the role of vice president.
Justice Kaul, born on December 26, 1958, is a highly respected figure in the Indian judiciary. He completed his schooling at Modern School, New Delhi, and went on to earn a degree in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, in 1979. He later completed his LLB at Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre in 1982, after which he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi.
In 1987, Justice Kaul became an Advocate-on-Record at the Supreme Court and was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1999. He also served as Senior Counsel for the Delhi High Court and Delhi University and provided legal advice to the Union of India and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
Justice Kaul’s judicial career began when he was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2001, becoming a permanent judge in 2003. He later served as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Madras High Court, earning a reputation for his fairness and legal acumen.
In February 2017, Justice Kaul was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, where he played a pivotal role in several landmark judgments. He retired in December 2023, after an illustrious judicial career spanning over two decades. His appointment to the BICC underscores his esteemed reputation in international legal circles.
