The Sessions Court in Mazgaon, Mumbai, provided temporary relief to Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) leader Sanjay Raut by granting him bail and suspending his 15-day jail sentence in a defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. Raut was required to furnish a bail bond of ₹50,000 as a condition for his release.
The case stemmed from a complaint by Medha Somaiya, who alleged that Raut made defamatory statements implicating her and her husband in a financial scandal. According to Somaiya, Raut accused them of being involved in a ₹100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets within the jurisdiction of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation. She claimed these statements were baseless and intended to tarnish their reputation.
Raut appealed to the Sessions Court after a magistrate court convicted him and imposed a 15-day jail term for defamation. The Sessions Court granted bail while his appeal is under review, allowing Raut temporary freedom as the case proceeds.
