Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has recommended the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the next CJI.
In a letter to the Central government, CJI Chandrachud proposed Justice Khanna’s name for the position. Justice Khanna is currently the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court after CJI Chandrachud.
CJI Chandrachud is set to retire on November 10, and if appointed, Justice Khanna will serve as CJI for a little over six months, until his retirement on May 13, 2025.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna began his legal practice in 1983, focusing on areas such as taxation, arbitration, commercial, and environmental matters. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and became a permanent judge a year later. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.
