The Oudh Bar Association of the Allahabad High Court has requested the transfer of Justice Sangeeta Chandra, citing allegations of mistreatment towards lawyers. In a letter addressed to Chief Justice Arun Bhansali on September 28, the association’s General Secretary, Advocate Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, detailed several complaints received regarding Justice Chandra’s alleged inhumane conduct toward advocates.
The letter notably referenced a recent altercation between Justice Chandra and Senior Advocate Satish Chandra Mishra during a hearing on September 27. According to the association, Justice Chandra initiated criminal contempt proceedings against Mishra during the hearing, which they claim undermined the dignity of her office.
The letter further noted that during the proceedings, Senior Advocate JN Mathur, representing the respondents, had requested Justice Chandra to reconsider her decision to initiate contempt proceedings against Mishra. However, the judge reportedly rejected the request.
The incident arose after Mishra allegedly shouted at the Bench following its refusal to grant an interim order in his favor. The Bench subsequently referred the matter to the Chief Justice of the High Court for further contempt of court proceedings against Mishra.
The association’s letter underscores the growing concerns within the legal community over the judge’s conduct and calls for her transfer to maintain a professional and respectful courtroom environment.
