A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Calcutta High Court seeking to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from holding a statewide Bengal Bandh [Sanjoy Das vs State of West Bengal].
The court has approved the urgent filing and listing of the PIL, scheduling the matter for a hearing tomorrow as the first case.
BJP Bengal announced a 12-hour Bangla Bandh on August 28 in protest against police actions during student demonstrations concerning the recent rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.
Filed by advocate Agnish Basu, the PIL aims to protect “the day-to-day public life of the common man from being disrupted by illegal bandhs called by political parties.”
The situation in Kolkata and Howrah escalated on August 27 when student protests turned chaotic. Demonstrators clashed with police during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ march, which was intended to reach the Bengal Secretariat, causing widespread disruption.
