Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud highlighted the significant contributions of lawyers who sacrificed their lucrative legal careers to fight for India’s independence and dedicated themselves to the nation’s cause. Speaking on Thursday, he emphasized that these lawyers not only played a pivotal role in securing India’s freedom but were also key in establishing a strong and independent judiciary.
“Many lawyers gave up their prosperous legal practices and devoted themselves to the nation’s cause. They were instrumental, not only in achieving freedom for India, but also in building a fiercely independent judiciary. However, the mission of these patriotic lawyers did not conclude with India’s independence. Even after independence, lawyers and the Bar have remained a constant force for good in our country. The Courts are essential for upholding the rights and dignity of citizens, but the Bar, committed to the Constitution and the rule of law, is vital for upholding the conscience of the Courts,” the CJI remarked.
He made these statements during the 78th Independence Day celebrations organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) at the Supreme Court.
CJI Chandrachud further noted that a knowledgeable and principled Bar ensures a vigilant and alert judiciary, serving as a bridge between the people and the courts.
“Members of the Bar are the crucial link between the people and the judges. They help us understand the concerns and the pulse of the public. Likewise, the Bar represents the profession and, by extension, the judges before the people. In this sense, the Bar functions as a two-way bridge between the people and the Court. An erudite and principled Bar is essential for a vigilant and alert judiciary,” said the CJI.
He also acknowledged that the work of the courts often reflects the struggles of ordinary Indians.
“I can place my hand on my heart and affirm that the work of the courts mirrors the struggles of ordinary Indians as they navigate the challenges of daily life. The Supreme Court of India sees a diverse array of litigants—from villages to metropolitan cities, of all religions, regions, castes, and genders—seeking justice. The legal community plays a crucial role in enabling the Court to deliver justice to these citizens,” said the CJI.
Additionally, CJI Chandrachud expressed that the legal community has been instrumental in firmly grounding the Constitution’s basic structure, advancing substantive due process, and protecting the dignity of women, gender minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other marginalized communities.
