On Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of two additional judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court as permanent judges. The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and Justice BR Gavai, approved the following judges for permanent status:
Justice Venkata Jyothirmai Pratapa
Justice Venuthurumalli Gopala Krishna Rao
Earlier, on May 16, the High Court Collegium had also recommended these judges for permanent appointment. The Supreme Court Collegium observed that neither the Chief Minister nor the Governor of Andhra Pradesh had provided their comments on the recommendation. As a result, the Department of Justice invoked paragraph 14 of the Memorandum of Procedure, which allows the Minister of Law and Justice to proceed with the recommendation if no comments are received within the specified time frame.
Supreme Court judges familiar with the High Court’s affairs were consulted and agreed that both judges are suitable for confirmation as permanent judges. After reviewing all relevant materials, the Collegium recommended their appointment as permanent judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
