The Supreme Court of India recently appointed Advocate Shraddha Deshmukh as the sole arbitrator in an international commercial arbitration [Acarer Metal Sanayi Ve Ticaret AS v. Lalwani Ferro Alloys Ltd].
This appointment represents a shift from the often criticized practice of appointing retired judges as arbitrators.
The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
Deshmukh earned her Bachelor’s degree in law from the Indian Law Society’s (ILS) Law College, Pune, in 2010, and later pursued a Master’s degree from the University of Oxford.
From 2011 to 2014, she was associated with Karanjawala and Company, followed by Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co. Between 2014 and 2018, Deshmukh worked with Senior Advocate Akhil Sibal, and later with Senior Advocate KK Venugopal, the Attorney General for India at the time.
Since 2018, she has been practicing independently before the Supreme Court of India.
