The State of Karnataka has appointed Senior Advocate Professor Ravivarma Kumar as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in the sexual abuse and kidnapping cases involving Janata Dal (Secular) leaders HD Revanna and Prajwal Revanna.
Kumar, who previously served as the Chairperson of the Karnataka Backward Classes Commission and represented petitioners in the Hijab ban case, also held the position of Advocate General for Karnataka from 2013 to 2015.
Previously, BN Jagadeesha was appointed as the SPP to prosecute the case against Prajwal Revanna.
Allegations of sexual abuse against Prajwal Revanna surfaced following the circulation of over 2,900 videos depicting the assault of multiple women on social media.
An SIT, headed by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BK Singh, is investigating the case and has summoned Prajwal Revanna.
Amid public outcry, Prajwal Revanna reportedly fled to Germany shortly after the April 26 elections in Karnataka and has yet to appear before the SIT.
On May 8, HD Revanna was remanded to judicial custody until May 14 following the conclusion of a three-day custody granted to the SIT.
